Do you want to lose weight and burn off extra fat? Well, for starters, you need to be able to calculate how much fat you’ll be burning through certain exercises or nutrition systems because without that information, it’s not very easy to accomplish your goal. Put it this way, when you play a sport you have to know what the score is to determine who wins, right? Well, it’s the same for burning fat. You need to know your body’s fat percentage to know if you’re succeeding in burning it off or not.
A problem I tend to see people go through is relying on how well they’re losing the excess fat by keeping track of their weight on a scale. Though the scale can be helpful, it shouldn’t be the sole source for determining how well you’re coming along in your journey to lose weight and burn fat. Sometimes a scale can cause people to quit doing the proper things (such as good weight training) if they see the numbers go up by a pound or two. It can be falsely discouraging.
Althrough the scale can be a damper on your fat loss process, you aren’t the one to take the blame for it. For a long time, people have been told the best way to keep track if they have lost fat or not is to weigh themselves on a scale. This is false! The reason being is that human body tends to go up and down in weight at certain times of the day, every single day! Just because the weight goes up and down, it doesn’t mean they have added or lost fat. Now you know, the scale can’t be fully trusted!
Not to put another downer on the scale, but people that are adding lean muscle throughout their bodies will find that numbers can go up rather than down.
Most people already know that muscle weighs more than fat. If you have been performing a steady resistance workout routine for a few months, then you should notice you’ve become stronger and that you have added more muscle to your body. By adding lean muscle it also means you’re adding weight, but it’s not from fat, so the increased number on your scale really isn’t a bad thing. Remember, this process is about losing fat, not losing weight.
Increasing the amount of muscle in your body means it’ll require extra calories to help build and keep the muscle alive. Your metabolism should also kick into gear and work faster, which will help fat burning become easier. Give yourself time, because soon you’ll get the joy of seeing fat loss from all the new muscles being built. This causes a calorie deficit due to your regular eating habits and the fact that you’re burning more calories due to the new muscle you’ve built.
An important factor is your body fat percentage, or in other words, how much fat makes up your total weight. Men are usually pleased if their body fat percentage is in the range of 12-15%, and women like to see that theirs is right around 16-20%. A great investment to help you keep track is a skin caliper, which normally doesn’t cost too much, or you can get another device that works the same so you’ll be able to keep up with calculating how much you’ve lost. As long as the percentage is steadily going down, then there’s really no need to ever step back on a scale!
Something else I’d recommend you using to help keep knowledge on your fat burning process is the tried and true mirror in your restroom. Though this may sound really easy, you need to use the mirror to calculate how much muscle you’ve added and fast you’ve lost.
Along with keeping an open mind on watching your weight with the scale and checking in on your body fat percentage, a mirror will be a great way to actually see your fat loss progress. If you can actually see how much your body is changing by looking in the mirror, then it should definitely motivate you to continue on in your journey to reach your goal.
Giving yourself a good but realistic expectation of how you want your body to look when you finish your fat loss journey can be a great way to calculate how well it’s working. I have taught in my diet and exercise class that many of our friends that work in fitness companies use a trick to sell their products. They use fitness models to show off their products which gives the viewer and person purchasing the product the false impression that they’ll get to the same physical condition just by purchasing the product. It works!
Though my advice may be blunt and not really what you want to hear, you still need to know the truth. Even having the best training program or plan, you can’t ever be guaranteed to have a body exactly like your idol.
It has been proven that our bodies are this way because of inherited family genes. No one is exactly the same, so everyone looks different physically. Obviously! Some people contain more muscle in their legs and arms, some have to carry along extra fat cells in their thighs and hips, some lack height while others tower above, some grow light hair, some have brown eyes and so forth.
Those factors also go along with that some people can cut off the extra fat and add on lean muscle easier than others. Though that may be obvious, it’s highly important to know so that no one damages their attempts at burning off fat with their diet or while working out at the gym. Basically, I’m trying to inform your that even if your friend can tone her butt and thighs easier than you, it doesn’t mean you’re doing something totally wrong. Don’t give up!
When you’re looking to obtain your fitness goal, you can only measure your success with yourself. Underneath the extra pounds and larger look you see in the mirror is that great and healthy looking body. Don’t assume it’s the same as the person right next to you because you may end up being known as a person with strong arms and broad shoulders. Or you could be someone that has a slim and toned waist that helps shape out your body.
Don’t think that you’ll always have to live with the way you look since that’s what you’ve received from your genes. Instead, you should feel in control, because you now know that you can actually get a hold of how you look and shape your body to be what you prefer.
By changing your habits to the right and healthy ones and obtaining great knowledge, you will be able to burn excess fat at a fast pace and transform your body in such a way that everyone around you will be shocked. Take it from me, I have actually seen it happen with people that are close to me. I’ve heard others compliment them with a great, “WOW!”
Above all, you will feel absolutely great knowing that you were able to shape your body the way you’ve wanted and you can keep it that way forever. It always feels great to have the upper hand, this is a chance for you to get it!
